The Old Maid and the Thief

old maid and the thief            If you think you have ever appreciated opera then this is something you will not want to miss.  A young singer in town named Michael Elliot is producing his version of Gian-Carlo Menotti’s opera The Old Maid and the Thief.  This terrific one act opera is highly accessible to many crowds as it is in English and contains most of the aspects you might find in a musical. The opera is 50 minutes long and is filled with comedy, mischief, and some very beautiful moments.  Set in the 1930’s just after prohibition, a handsome vagabond knocks at the back door of Miss Todd’s house.  She secretly takes him in, and cares for him with the help of her housemaid Laetitia.  Meanwhile, the newspaper reports that a man has escaped from the county jail.  Will the women turn in their guest and face ridicule from the town?  Perhaps they will harbor the handsome young man.  One can only hope that Miss Todd’s nosy friend Miss Pinkerton doesn’t catch wind of the situation.
The young singers that are involved in this musical are very well trained, most of them with or working toward degrees in opera.  The director Michael Elliot has been featured as a singer around town and has performed roles with Opera Las Vegas, Nevada Opera Theatre, UNLV, and many other fine groups as a singer.  He has decided to try on the director’s hat to see how it fits.  The idea was mainly sparked by an interest in giving local singers opportunities.  There will be many performances and many singers portraying the four characters.  As well as directing, Michael will perform the role of Bob during some of the performances.

There are three performances scheduled so far.  And many more to come!
